GI Dynamics - Defining Noninvasive Metabolic Control

Limitations of Surgery

Surgical procedures, such as gastric bypass, may be an option for some individuals, but there are significant limitations associated with bariatric surgery.

Fear

Surgical anxiety is a significant issue in obesity treatment. When asked why they choose not to undergo bariatric surgery, most patients will say it is fear of surgery.

Risks

For those who do agree to surgery, there are the same risks that are associated with any surgical procedure. Moreover, certain factors put some patients in a high risk category for these bariatric surgeries, according to a Duke University study:

  • A body mass index of greater than 50: On this scale, a measure of body fat based on a person's weight and height, a level of 30 and above is considered obese.
  • Male gender: Men are more likely than women to suffer from conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and metabolic disorders that can add to the risks of surgery.
  • Increased age: Patients over 45 are known to be at the highest risk for death after bariatric surgery.
  • Hypertension: Patients with hypertension, or high blood pressure, typically have heart disease or chronic inflammation of blood vessels that can add to the risks of surgery.
  • Pulmonary embolus risk: Patients who have had a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in the lungs, or are at risk for developing an embolism are at elevated risk.

Interestingly, despite results achieved with bypass surgery, only 200,000 patients (1% of the eligible patient population) in the US choose to undergo invasive surgical procedures.

Nonsurgical Therapeutics: a New Class of Treatment Options to Address These Limitations

The EndoBarrierâ„¢ Gastrointestinal Liner is a new class of treatment options between pharmaceutical regimens and surgery called nonsurgical therapeutics. Nonsurgical therapeutics are designed to eliminate or reduce the risks and side effects associated with surgical options. The EndoBarrier Gastrointestinal Liner is placed easily and quickly without any incisions, which can significantly reduce patient anxiety and recuperative time. And as a nonsurgical therapeutic, the EndoBarrier Gastrointestinal Liner can be easily removed once the desired effect has been attained.
